“ The sky is the source of light in Nature and it governs everything.”

Mary is a professional painter working in both Wiltshire and Devon.  Her work is inspired by the land and sea.  ‘Through my paintings I explore the underlying structure of the land, the power of the sea - and the transient qualities of both’.  She is drawn to the ancient remote landscapes and their atmosphere and apparent fragility in relation to light, rain and wind, yet in the end it is their timeless power in the seen and felt moment that remains.

Her work explores the interplay between sky, land and sea in relation to light.  It is that fleeting moment in time she tries to capture.

Skies are a passion for Mary, she is never drawn to a bright blue sky, there must be movement, drama, emotion. She is influenced by the English Landscape tradition, particularly Turner and Constable.  Other influences include Joan Eardley, Peter Lanyon and Joan Mitchell.

Mary’s work is based on a strong observation and direct experience of nature. She sketches and draws in the landscape and uses these studies back in the studio to develop her paintings to evoke a spirit of place and the ongoing passage of time.
