TIME & TIDE

A SENSE OF PLACE

This exhibition is my Final Major Project and is the culmination of my two year MA with Falmouth University.

Centred on the confluence of the Taw and Torridge estuaries, it is a paean to the rivers and walks I have taken there.

The estuary has always been a very important source of inspiration for me in all its changing moods and lights. It is in a constant state of flux and it is this that I try to depict.

This exhibition incorporates my paintings, photography and film work. The installation records a journey of observation and reflection along the estuary creating an immersive experience.

My practice is a direct response to the spirit of place. As a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest and part of the UNESCO North Devon Biosphere Reserve it is vitally important to be aware of the past, present and the future in the face of environmental change.  We leave our traces on nature and nature leaves its traces on us; we are all inter-connected.

Coastal erosion is taking place at an accelerated rate in the estuary, which I have witnessed in my paintings over the years. Through observation we become aware of the spaces we live in and how we interact with them. If we can foster public awareness in the local situation this could promote action with a more global reach. The rivers are both a motif and a metaphor for times past and future.
